Mandolin
ad libs in video and tablature — A
series of videos of me playing improvisations off the top of my head,
using some of my favorite licks over a simple chord structure in all the
popular keys. Accompanying MP3 files and tablature hopefully will help
you add some licks to your bag of tricks.
Notes:
- These
are improvisations, not songs. They aren't meant to be memorized (any
more than a particular tab of "Old Joe Clark" is THE way to
play it), but to serve as resources for you to draw from in order to
better develop your own improvisations. This is how I spend time practicing
the mandolin, and I'm sharing these captured moments with you.
- I'm
assuming a certain level of accomplishment on mandolin. You've mastered
your scales and arpeggios and have a good, consistent, alternating up-and-down
picking motion -- i.e., down on the quarter notes and down-and-up on
the eighth notes. This is especially important with double stop picking,
which comprises a lot of what I play.
- On
the MP3s I've included a rhythm guitar on the right-hand side. Turn
your balance all the way to one side and you'll hear mandolin or guitar
only. The MP3s can be slowed down using Windows Media Player 10, along
with some other programs .
- This
is an ongoing series so check back often! I will only finish when I
run out of licks.
